Merchant of the Month
MERCHANT OF THE MONTH – JERRY’S TOYOTA
Where do you go when it’s time to buy a new car? These days, there are a lot of options – dealerships, used car lots, even the Internet. In Maryland, particularly in the Baltimore area, one name has been synonymous with the best deal and the best service for over 50 years – Jerry’s! Featuring cars, trucks, SUVs and vans, along with service, parts, and a collision center, Jerry’s Auto Group focuses on providing a stellar experience, whether you are buying, selling, or servicing your car. Jerry’s Toyota is our merchant of the month!
Jerry Stautberg, the man behind it all, was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He played football in high school and college and was drafted by the Chicago Bears, where he played for one year and sold cars in the off-season. Football salaries then were not like they are today, so Jerry chose to leave the NFL and concentrate on a full-time career in the automobile industry. He came to Baltimore in 1957 and opened Jerry’s Chevrolet in the Govans area of Baltimore city. His slogan “5600 York Road at Bellona, the best place to become a Chevrolet ownah” made the dealership a household name. As the dealership grew, it moved to its current location on Joppa Road in Parkville in 1971. Jerry’s Toyota opened in the White Marsh area of Baltimore in 1981, and Scion was added in 2005. Also part of the group is Jerry’s Mitsubishi in Parkville.
“He was a pioneer – one of the first dealers to advertise on television,” says his daughter, Susan Pless. Jerry appeared in all of his television and radio ads for many years, and the slogan “For the best deal anywhere, you just gotta come to Jerry’s” brought in customers who looked forward to meeting the man who had become someone they could identify with. Jerry would often visit with and talk to his customers, which built a loyalty to the dealership that remains in place today.
Jerry passed away in December 2008, but his legacy lives on through the customer service principles that he put in place years ago. Today his son Jim, who in his youth would visit the dealership on Saturdays with his dad as and started working full-time with him after college, handles the overall management of the auto group. Susan handles the day-to-day administration of the dealerships, having worked in the office during high school summers, then part-time while raising her children. Now that they are grown (her son works at Jerry’s Toyota), she’s back to full-time and enjoys the variety of challenges that come with the job every day. What really makes it a great place to work, she says, is the people. Many have been on staff for years, some as long as 30 years at the Chevrolet dealership. It’s a tribute to what Jerry hoped to accomplish – an organization of caring people striving to take care of their customers every step of the way.
Jerry’s continues its commitment to customer service with their “It’s About You!” program, which includes, among other things, tires for life, complimentary first scheduled service and car washes for life, tire rotations for life, shuttle service and rental cars, and more. And if you’re shopping for a new car and Jerry’s doesn’t have exactly what you want, they can get it for you through a dealer exchange.

Elin grew up in Maryland, and after many years of working for the government, Elin decided to capitalize on her interest by opening EJ Bridals in April 2010. She takes pride in her ability to offer one-on-one personal service to the brides and she works mainly by appointment. While offering this type of
service can be tedious, it’s all worth it, Elin says, when she sees the look and the smile on the bride’s face when she finds that perfect dress!
In addition to wedding gowns, EJ Bridals carries jewelry made by a local designer that can be custom-made to match the wedding colors. She also carries veils, tiaras, hair “bling,” shoes, and purses. This year EJ Bridals will become “Prom Headquarters,” carrying eight different lines of designer prom dresses in all price ranges. Prom-themed events, including try-on sessions and light refreshments, are also planned. Elin recommends Carrington Formals in Prince Frederick for tuxedos who will offer prom incentives this year through EJ Bridals. Young ladies in high school can try on prom gowns at EJ Bridals where the guys can pick up a VIP card and head to Carrington Formals for their tuxedo fitting. The boutique has also established relationships with other wedding vendors and can recommend them for their services.
Although she’s been in business for just under a year, Elin has already accomplished much! She has participated in bridal events, including a runway show in La Plata, and was voted Best New Business of 2010 by the Best of the Bay in Bay Weekly. EJ Bridals also won a Golden Pumpkin Award from Annmarie Gardens for lively and spirited participation in their 2010 Halloween event.

MERCHANT OF THE MONTH – CAKES BY JENEVA
The holidays are upon us, and soon many of us will be gathering with family and friends to celebrate and reconnect. In most cases, that means food will be involved! If you’re looking for a special treat for your holiday table or need a designer cake for an upcoming occasion, our merchant of the month can help!
Cakes by Jeneva is a small yet bustling bakery in Prince Frederick that serves the Calvert County and surrounding metro area. Owner Jeneva Stalnaker and her staff of six experienced bakers and decorating artists create cakes for every occasion, from the traditional round or sheet-style birthday cake to three-dimensional marvels that rival those seen only on the Food Network!
This year, Cakes by Jeneva celebrated their 10-year anniversary, but Jeneva has been baking and decorating cakes and goodies for 25 years. A longtime resident of Dunkirk, she spent the first 15 years of her baking career working out of her home, using the skills learned from a neighbor to create sweet confections for new and returning customers. When the business outgrew her kitchen, Jeneva moved to her current location at 151 Central Square Plaza and opened her doors in January of 2000. Prince Frederick has smelled sweeter ever since.
If you have a particular type of cake in mind for a special occasion, Jeneva and her team will work with you to make it happen. All of the cakes and icing are made on the premises in Prince Frederick, and the artists use fondant (a thick, smooth icing) and gum paste (a spun sugar mixture) to create unique designs that complete the effect. Cakes by Jeneva also offers “edible images” – cakes that are decorated with images from photos. Weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and other specialty cakes are priced reasonably and according to the size, style, and number of servings.
If cake is not your favorite, fear not! Cakes by Jeneva also offers fruit pies, including apple, cherry, and banana cream, along with pumpkin, coconut cream, and pecan. They also make cookies, cheesecakes, and other gourmet dessert items.
Jeneva and her staff work together to brainstorm new cake design and decorating ideas.
Sometimes it’s as easy as looking at a photo, and other times it takes trial and error before coming up with the right “construction” technique. Some of the more elaborate cakes that they have produced include a submarine, an octopus, a Juicy Couture handbag, and a pillow-shaped cake with a tiara on top. Cakes by Jeneva has also prepared cakes for celebrities, too! Visit their website for photos of the many designs that they have achieved for their customers – www.jeneva.com.
Cakes by Jeneva is open Monday from 12 to 5 PM, Tuesday through Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM, and Saturday from 9 AM to 3 PM. Birthday cake orders can typically be completed with three-days’ notice; more complicated designs and constructions require more lead time. Give them a call for your next party!

MERCHANT OF THE MONTH – WHAT’S UP? MEDIA
It’s a beautiful day in Maryland. What are your plans? Do you know where to go to enjoy live music, have a nice dinner, or enjoy a weekend festival? How about an art exhibit or the theatre? If you are familiar with our merchant of the month, then you know where to turn when you’re looking for something new and interesting to do – you grab a copy of What’s Up? Annapolis and you’re on your way!
Like many success stories that you hear these days, the concept for What’s Up was conceived by an entrepreneur to fill a gap that existed in the publication of local events and activities. Living in Annapolis, Veronica Tovey often heard people commenting about the things they were doing and seeing around town, but she had a difficult time finding information about such events. In 1997, Veronica sat down in her home with two of her friends and came up with the concept for a magazine that would feature events and activities within an hour of the Annapolis area, providing local residents with a host of choices for things to do in town and as far away as Baltimore and Washington. With Carol Denny as the editor and Linda Laing as the art director, Veronica published her inaugural magazine, initially titled What’s Up? All the Entertainment and Sports, and an enterprise was born!
The What’s Up? magazine family now includes several popular publications that provide a wealth of information and features for specific markets. At the request of the United States Naval Academy, Veronica and her team developed and launched the Naval Academy guide, a yearly guide to the Yard that is distributed to the Midshipmen and contains valuable information for the Brigade and their families. The Services for Seniors directory, produced for the Department of Aging, contains all of the services that senior citizens need in one convenient book and is conveniently distributed in senior centers, grocery stores, hospitals, doctor’s offices, and drug stores. The current editor-in-chief, Nadja Maril, suggested that the wedding section of the main publication could stand on its own as a wedding guide, and What’s Up? Weddings, a twice-yearly publication, became a reality. It is available in local bookstores and by subscription to the magazine. What’s Up? Eastern Shore covers events and features from Kent Island to Cambridge and is the largest magazine on the Eastern Shore.
A popular feature in the What’s Up? magazines is the Top Doc and Top Dentist articles. Local physicians and dentists vote for their favorite peers, and the winning professionals are featured in these issues. Other favorites are the “Best Of” issues which feature on-line voting in various categories like restaurants and stores.
A unique fact about the What’s Up publication family is that it initially started out as a free publication mailed to upscale neighborhoods. Veronica decided to take it to the next step and began a campaign to to sell subscriptions and put her publications on the newsstands. The What’s Up? magazines are the first free publications (also called controlled circulation publications) in the nation to achieve that goal, according to the City and Regional Magazines Association. What’s Up? was also voted into the CRMA, which is an achievement of its own.
A 20-year resident of Annapolis, Veronica enjoys the ongoing creativity in the publication business. “There’s always something to learn, and it’s always fun,” she says. Veronica also feels that the magazines bring communities together by featuring articles about local events and activities that are familiar to readers.
What’s Up? publications can be found locally in Barnes & Noble, Borders, Whole Foods, and other locations, and its circulation totals 60,000. You can also enjoy the publications online at www.whatsupmag.com.
MERCHANT OF THE MONTH – MITCHELL DENTAL CARE

MERCHANT OF THE MONTH – THE STEAKHOUSE
Summer vacation season is drawing to a close, and for many families, that means the kids are back in school, fall sports and other activities are in full swing, and family dinners are either rigorously planned or “catch as catch can.” While summer might be officially over, you can still treat yourself and your family to a “mini-vacation” – a dinner away from home – with our merchant of the month!
The Steakhouse, with locations in Edgewater and Perry Hall, offers a wide variety of meals made from the freshest ingredients available. Open daily for lunch and dinner, both locations offer a casual family atmosphere and take pride in offering a wide variety of steak and seafood meals, as well as chicken and pork, to please any palate.
Originally called “The Original Steakhouse,” The Steakhouse has been serving up hand-cut corn-fed aged prime beef since 2003 (the name changed to separate the restaurants from the franchise last year). Mike Weckstein, Director of Operations for both Steakhouse locations, has been in the restaurant business for 20 years. He started out in fast food and gradually worked each position in the industry, from clerk to waiter to manager to director. Mike knows what it takes to operate a successful establishment that keeps customers coming back over and over again. In fact, some patrons come from Southern Maryland to dine at the Steakhouse in Edgewater, just to enjoy that melt-in-your-mouth beef!
Each Steakhouse location employs an in-house butcher who hand-cuts all steaks, and fresh seafood selections are available every day. While waiting for the entrée of your choice, you can sample the many appetizers on the menu, such as wings (of several flavors!), nachos, Ahi tuna, shrimp in several different preparations, crab dip, potato skins, and more. Soup and chili are also available, along with a large selection of fresh and crispy salads. There’s also a wide variety of sandwiches and entrees (too many to mention here – check out their website below for more info), and a kids menu for the little ones. If you’re into sports, you can enjoy your favorites on one of the 10 large-screen TVs located in the restaurant, and the Perry Hall location has a game room featuring arcade-style games and the option to win prizes.
Planning a party or gathering? The Steakhouse can provide everything you need to make your party great! You can order anything on the menu, along with all of the necessary setups and professional staff to make your event memorable.

MERCHANT OF THE MONTH – EDUCATE & CELEBRATE
Summer vacation…we eagerly anticipate it all year long, but before you know it, the back-to-school sales are beginning and kids have glum looks on their faces. There’s one place, though, where the learning environment is in full-swing during every season of the year and smiles grace the faces of children and adults – our merchant of the month, Educate & Celebrate!
With locations in Waldorf and Prince Frederick, Educate & Celebrate specializes in selling quality educational materials for use at home and in the classroom, including books, flash cards, stickers, bulletin board sets, games, interactive whiteboard software for smart boards, and children’s classic literature. For older students, Educate & Celebrate offers Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) preparation materials as well as the books recommended for preparing for the Advanced Placement (AP) examinations that earn students college credit while still in high school. They also stock the summer required reading materials for both Calvert and Charles Counties and a host of materials for Sunday schools, preschools, and daycare centers.
Educate & Celebrate is the brainchild of Laurie Uherek of Huntingtown, Maryland. Raised among a family of teachers, Laurie learned early in life that the quality of the educational materials is a vital part of ensuring a solid education for a child. Her hometown hosted an educational store that stoked her desire to start her own business providing educational materials and supplies. “There’s nothing better to sell than something that stimulates educating a child,” Laurie says. Entering her 20th year in business this October, Laurie has fulfilled her lifelong dream of owning such a store – and she owns two of them! The Prince Frederick store, established in October of 1991, offers a wide variety of items for family shoppers, while the Waldorf store, which opened in 2002, is geared toward teachers.
In addition to educational materials, Educate & Celebrate also sells school and preschool furniture, desks, chairs, mats, cots, chalk and white boards, overhead projectors, and learning carpets for classrooms. They also feature educational and specialty toys and games that inspire critical thinking and stimulate the mind and encourage creativity. For budding scientists, there are chemistry kits, erector sets, and DNA kits, too. Each year, Laurie attends the international toy fair in New York City to find unique or award-winning toys that compliment their market and who they serve. They carry some licensed products (Thomas the Tank Engine and Calico Critters, to name a few), but Laurie enjoys offering unique products that can’t be found in the larger chain stores.
Laurie lives in Huntingtown with her husband and two children and takes pride in involving herself and her business in the community. Educate & Celebrate partners with groups to help support causes, like autism awareness, the United Way, and the DARE program. Laurie serves as Vice Chair of Calvert Memorial Hospital and is also very involved in the arts as the treasurer of Ann Marie Gardens, a sculpture garden and arts center in Solomons Island. “Giving back to the community is what keeps me motivated and connected to the community,” Laurie says.
Join the staff at Educate & Celebrate on Friday, August 20th for an open-house. Each store will be open from 9am-9pm offering free gifts with purchase, hourly drawings, refreshments, and a chance to win $500 in merchandise as a grand prize for the day.
Educate & Celebrate’s two locations are open Monday –Thursday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday from 12 to 4 PM.

Waldorf location: St. Charles Towne Plaza, 1300 Smallwood Drive West
MERCHANT OF THE MONTH – MID-ATLANTIC POWERWASHING
Each month we try to introduce our merchant of the month with a catchy scenario or couple of sentences that set the stage for what we are going to tell you about them. This month, we’re going to be short and sweet, and once you read more, you’ll understand. Ready? Here goes:
Got dirt?? If you do, then you will definitely want to contact our Merchant of the Month! Mid-Atlantic Power Washing, Inc., of Annapolis, Maryland, is poised and ready to remove the dirt and grime from the exterior of your home, deck, sidewalks, place of business, parking area, motor fleet, boat – you name it, they can wash it. Mid-Atlantic specializes in commercial and residential pressure washing using both hot and cold water and chemicals that are gentle on the environment.
Robert Hardesty founded Mid-Atlantic Power Washing in 2001 after demonstrating his skill with a pressure washer while performing power-washing tasks on an occasional basis. Since then, the business has grown from a one-man operation in Southern Maryland to a crew of 12 pressure washers, two foremen, a fleet of eight vehicles, and a support staff that keeps things running behind the scenes. Mid-Atlantic now serves customers all over Anne Arundel, Calvert, Prince Georges, and Howard counties from its headquarters on Lee Street in Annapolis.
In addition to routine pressure-washing jobs like homes, patios, commercial buildings, sidewalks, and parking areas, Mid-Atlantic cleans gutters and washes and stains decks and fences, too. They also help beautify the environment by removing graffiti. “Pressure washing actually forces the graffiti into the brick,” Rob says. Mid-Atlantic uses techniques that pull the graffiti out of the material and restore it to its unmarred condition. They also bring their own water to every job.
One of the most unique aspects of Mid-Atlantic’s process is that they perform wastewater recovery to prevent runoff from reaching the Chesapeake Bay and other waterways. The impact of wastewater recovery is key when cleaning commercial areas, as the build-up of substances like grease, oil, and chemicals on parking surfaces can be significant. Mid-Atlantic also has a crew available to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency situations like truck fires and oil and hydraulic fluid spills.
For residential customers, Rob recommends pressure-washing of decks every two to three years. He also notes that any type of siding can be pressure-washed: vinyl, aluminum, composite – even cedar siding, which can be stained and re-sealed after a good wash. If you are preparing your home for sale or rent, Mid-Atlantic can help you beautify your property – they work frequently with realtors and property management companies doing just that. The average house washing is typically about $300 but depends on the square footage and height of the house; for businesses, the square footage sets the cost.
Mid-Atlantic Power Washing operates Monday through Friday and on weekends as well. Call Rob for a free estimate and be sure to mention that you heard about Mid-Atlantic by reading the Cash Flow Plus newsletter – you’ll receive 15% off any service for the month of July!

Lisa likes to stock as many “made in the USA” items as she can, and she tries to support the community by featuring locally-made items in the store. While a lot of their customers are campers and vacationers who pass through, they also serve many regular locals and day trippers, too. Many customers return year after year, and Lisa and Jerry welcome them back. “My fear is that Mom and Pop-type stores are becoming extinct. Our customers support us, Mom and Pop, they are amazing! We have the most wonderful customers! ” Lisa says. Customer service is #1 at Assateague Market!
Assateague Market is open from April 15 to October 31. During the peak summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day, hours are 7 AM to 10 PM, sometimes to 11 PM to service campers’ needs. During the spring and fall the hours are a bit shorter. If you stop in during the month of May, be sure to mention this article to receive 20% off any souvenir or deli order!
